Description
General Shepard consists of 107 apartment homes for elderly or disabled persons and families. At the center of the community is a beautiful courtyard in which residents can relax in the gazebo, or take a walk and enjoy the flower gardens.
General Shepard is located in the heart of downtown Westfield, MA. Westfield is rich in history, which includes the history of General William Shepard, for whom our community is named. General William Shepard, a distinguished Westfield native, fought in the War for Independence and was the companion of General Washington in most of his battles of the Revolution. A statue of General Shepard stands in the center of the town green.
A portion of the community is the converted and rehabilitated building that once housed the United States Whip Company. During the 1800s, this company produced nearly 90% of the whips made in the country. This is how Westfield came to be known as the "Whip City."
