The Durham Hosiery Mill was founded in 1898 and manufactured cotton hosiery for men, women and children. The Mill Complex was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978 as one of the finest examples of mill construction standing in North Carolina.

Renovated in 1987, the old Mill is a typical mill construction with brick walls and exposed wooden ceiling joists. The Mill now houses 151 affordable apartments for elderly, disabled and handicapped persons. Residents must qualify under Section 8 income guidelines.
